Brian Finestone's Park Repo...

THE STOKE IS AGELESS

Surfers coined the term stoke to represent to exhilaration felt by anyone feeling the flow of riding waves. The feeling of being stoked has transcended beyond surfing and can be achieved by anyone who feels the flow of sliding effortlessly on snow or through thin mountain air. The ultimate sensation of being stoked comes from the feeling you get when you stomp that elusive trick you have been trying and slide away clean for the first time. You can get stoked for someone else when they nail a new trick too. I have seen the look in the eyes of a person who gets stoked on riding for the first time; it is obvious regardless of whether they are four or forty. It is this feeling that keeps us coming back for more, it is the search for the stoke that gets us trying new tricks each day in the park, with the knowledge that the feeling is moments away.

Part of what makes the Park Crew stoked is the feedback we get from skiers and riders every day. We work hard designing installing and grooming the park to keep it fresh for the regulars and to create new opportunities to try new trick variations on new set-ups. It doesn’t matter how young or old you are, there is something in the Parks that you can learn on. Trust me, it’s worth it, you’ll be stoked!

Saturday March 15th is the final installment of King of The Rail for the season, so don’t miss this last chance to wear the crown and go home with some swag. The following day on March 16th we are holding the last Telus Park Rider Sessions Slopestyle of the year on Whistler Mountain. This course is going to be rad with one of the best set-ups to date on the Green Acres Jump Line (including the wall ride). March 22-23 will be the final Snowcross race of the season, so sign up, wax up and get training because if the turn out from the last race is any indication, this one will be packed.

TGR's 'Tangerine Dream' Whi...
All you Whistlerites... Mark it on your calendar, TGR's epic new film 'The Tangerine Dream' is premiering in Whistler on Friday November 4th at MY Millennium Place theater, followed by a killer TANGERINE AFTER PARTY at the Longhorn Saloon.

The film represents 10 years of broken down trucks, whiskey bottles, wanderlust and the most down and dirty skiing and boarding you have ever seen. This rusty orange story is about the origins of TGR, outlaw athletes and the ragged lifestyle that has kept this posse's dream and way of life alive. The movement is stronger than ever with Nobis accomplishing the impossible in Alaska, the Olenicks taking their park skills to AK, Jeremy Jones straight-lining 50 degree spine walls, and Sage fusing style and big mountain.

Watch local riders Dana Flahr, Ryan Oakden, Kye Peterson & Victoria Jealouse show the world how to ski & board Whistler style. This vagabond tale will take you through the lifestyle of skiing and the passion that continues to change the face of the sport. Take a ride in the orange truck that started it all on a rowdy road trip through India, Turkey, Switzerland, France, Alaska, Aspen, Utah, Montana, California and Jackson Hole.

ATTN: High school skiers
Ya Gotta Ride the Lift

Everyone always wants more out of life. It’s naturally, and it’s good… It is in no way selfish. For purposes of this article, posted on a skiing website, our community wants more skiing. How do we best achieve this goal? Well to ski we need first, free time, second, money. Money allows up to purchase tickets, skies, a vehicle to get us to the mountain, beer for the after party etc. The more money and free time you have the more you will be able to ski. The better job you get the more money you will have and the better you are at your job the more free time you will have. So now the question becomes, how do I get the best job possible and how do I become great at my job? The answer my friends, is education.
At some point in our not so distant past, people started to realize that there were great disparities in our society, many disparities. Among them, huge economic disparities, huge and growing economic disparities, the rich get richer the poor get poorer. For a while this was just the way life was and no one questioned it. Then one day a group of people, today you would call them democrats, grew a conscious and said, “Hey this is not fair, we need to grant everyone the opportunity to better their lives, it should just be rich white men who are able to advance in life.” So they kicked it and came up with a solution, this solution, the great equalizer, education. Education is the way to move on up in life (unless of course you can rock the guitar, hit the fade away jump shot, throw the pig skin 50 yards etc.). Today education is better than ever and though the system still favors the rich (40,000 bones if you want Ivy league kids), it is now more available than ever to people of all age, race, and creed.
I know you think school sucks and the last thing you want to do is spend 4 more years in a classroom, but think about college as a day at the mountain. At the extremes, college can be a 4 year party or it can be 4 years in the library, so think about it like this: partying is the run, class and studying is the chair life ride. The first thing you need to realize is that those who never get to the mountain, or those who never go up the chair life, never get to ski, this is just stupid, so go to college. Now think about the chair life ride. It sucks right, all you can think about is the next run. You see it right in front of you, you see other people enjoying it and you just want off. Nobody wants to go to the library just like nobody wants to ride the chair lift, but if you wanna get to the top, you gotta ride the lift. At the same time, those who are so focused on skiing and stay on the life as little as possible, well they always get off at mid-station. They spend the least amount of time on the chair lift, but they also only ski the bottom of the mountain. Now those who put the commitment in, those who take the gondola to the top, those who go to all their classes and spend some extra time in the library and plan a head, they ski the whole mountain. They get the most out of their day of skiing and they get the most out of their time at college.
Needless to say, you don’t want to spend all day on the gondola, going up and down, just watching other people ski. I doubt I will remember half of the time I spent in class, but I know I will remember the great times I had with my friends (well before we break out the Southern Comfort). College is about the chair lift and the run. Its about finding that balance. It’s having the patients and commitment to take that long ass ride up the gondola to the top because you know it means more skiing once you’re off that thing.

Powder For Life
Powder Heaven

I too was once caught up in the Whistler life, one part Hollywood, one part ski town. I lived in a house with 9 other people. I drank the 5-dollar beers in the local clubs. I too waited patiently in line for the peak chair to open. And I to charged it. Once the bombing is over, it’s an all out race to lay down tracks before they are all gone, the Cirque, Bagel Bowl, Air Jordan, all while leaving friends behind based on “no friends on a powder day” rule. Although Whistler boosts the highest vertical, most consistent snowfall and a local array of talent that is hard to match, it is losing its soul. It’s losing the very thing that pulled us away from college and a stable life. It’s losing that ski-town, laid-back attitude of a mountain village.
I’d almost forgotten why I had moved there, when my savior came in form of this e-mail:

“ Hey Jeff, Powder in July, you in?”

Less than two weeks later I was standing around in my carhartts and hoodie pounding beers to the beat of 80’s rock in the aptly named SnowPub. The snow was dumping so fast outside, and the visibility was non-existent. The mountain would not be opening until after the storm had passed. It was then I realized what whistler was missing: its soul. I was in Termas de Chillan, Chile, and the storm outside had brought an energy to this tiny village that you could never describe. The pub was packed wall to wall, but not with partying locals. It was full of powder junkies. Taking a look around, you could pick out groups of French, Swede’s, Aussi’s and of course Canadians. Missing however, were the parkrats, sponsor chasers and film crews. Everyone here was to here to ski powder.
By the time the storm passed, I felt like I knew everyone in town. I’d acquired the nickname “Canada”, due to the fact I wore mostly I AM Canadian T-shirts and had a helmet cleverly ducked taped to show the Canadian flag.
With bluebird skies and two days rest, I left the hostel with a British mate and headed to the mountain. Four feet had fallen and the day could only be described as epic. About 30 people made the trip up that day, and all of them powder hounds from around the globe. After a few quick warm-up laps, it became obvious that the “no friends on a powder day” rule was not effective here. Instead, you had pure camaraderie. Lift lines were for enthusiastic whoops and hollers, strangers would tell you about hidden lines and surprisingly there was no-one rushing to make it back to their line. If you didn’t ski it today, it would be there tomorrow. There were to many lines and not enough skiers. I skied fresh powder for six days, never having to hike more than fifteen minutes, and skied some of the sickest lines of my life with some of the best skiers I had ever met. At no point did anyone talk of sponsorship, filming or contests. We were there just to ski.
The trip brought my skiing and me back to life. I realized again why I had first moved to a ski town, and why I would never quit living the dream. Skiing was simply a lifestyle, and powder-days were rewards for your dedication.

Drilling on ANWR Outline fo...
Affirmative
Resolved: The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge should be opened to oil and gas exploration and drilling.

Contention I: Topicality
Harm/Need 1. Limited Domestic Supply of Petrolium
A. Increase in gas prices
-- 800 mile pipeline from Prudhoe Bay to Valdez
B. Foreign oil dependency
-- Strained relationships with countries
C. Less availability
Harm/Need 2. Job Availability
A. Less jobs for drillers
-- Won't decrease unemployment rates & gov't costs
B. Less construction jobs for home builders
-- Less expansion of communities & businesses
-- Less economic increase
Harm/Need 3. Less State and National Income
A. Less oil that could be sold to increase state & gov't income
B. Not helping towards massive state debt
-- Library cuts, etc.

Contention II: Inherency
I. Present system prohibits drilling in ANWR
II. Gas prices are currently almost record high
III. Much of US gas is imported from foreign countries
IV. Little income for Alaska other than petrolium from north slope
V. Not as many construction & drilling occupations available as there could be

Contention III: Solvency
I. Gas prices should decrease
II. Larger abundance of gas in the state
III. Alaska will have a much larger income from exporting
IV. Many new construction, drilling, & other job opportunities will be opened
V. Better ties with foreign countries
VI. Unemployment rates should drop
-- Gov't. spending on unemployment should decrease

Negative

Resolved: Opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling and exploration is unnecessary and may have a predominantly negative impact on the state of Alaska.
*Definition of national wildlife refuge:
-- Refuge: Place that provides shelter and protection from danger or distress

Contention I:) Topicality
Harm/Need 1. Dependency on Foreign Oil
A. *Statistics on % dependency
B. ANWR would only decrease dependency a small amount and for a short period of time
Harm/Need 2. Accessibility to Oil & Amount
A. U.S. Geological Survey estimates:
-- Only six months worth of oil in ANWR
-- Not available for another ten years
Harm/Need 3. Contradicts Purpose of National Wildlife Refuge
A. *Restate definition of wildlife refuge
B. "What little remains of that wilderness is part of our heritage and deserves to be protected." - Brooks Yeager, VP of WWF
C. If one wildlife refuge open, gives support to open others
Harm/Need 4. Other Resources
A. Nonpolluting renewable resources instead of fossil fuels
B. Would help with independence from foreign oil
Harm/Need 5. Economic Influence
A. Wouldn't help with much income because of such small supply & availability
B. Only payable in installments ten years down the road
C. Would be a greater cost to drill
Harm/Need 6. Job Creation, or Not?
-- Would only supply jobs for limited time because of small amount of oil

*Include researched statistics

Closing: Drilling on the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge would overall be a negative thing and cause more harms with the economy, wildlife, terms of national wildlife refuges and parks, and just be a hassle to the state instead of a benefit.

*Sorry guys... This is pretty rough, confusing, and hard to follow, but I had to do it a while ago for my Debate class. I have to have it typed up now, and my Microsoft Word isn't working properly, so I'm using this, hahah. I'm a loser. Yeehaw. I have a buttload of other statistcs that aren't included in here. Those were used during the actual debate. This is just our rough outline we had to turn in for the written grade.
